Local SEO Checklist for Service Businesses

Local SEO begins with accurate business information and clear explanations of the services you provide. A service business should help nearby customers understand its location or service area, evaluate its offer and contact the right person. Repeating city names across dozens of similar pages is not a useful substitute.

Start with the information a prospective customer needs. A person seeking a local service may want to know whether you serve their area, whether appointments are available and what they should prepare before enquiring.

Keep your business details consistent

Review the business name, phone number, website, operating hours and location or service area across your website and business profiles. Use genuine operating information; do not invent branches or addresses for visibility.

Google’s local ranking guidance recommends accurate, complete business information and explains that local results consider relevance, distance and prominence. Completing a profile does not guarantee a position in search.

Create useful service pages

Each page should explain the service, who it suits, relevant scope, the enquiry process and evidence you are permitted to share. Mention location where it helps the customer, such as explaining the area covered for an on-site shoot.

For example, a production service page might clarify whether the quote depends on travel, locations or filming requirements. Those details help a customer make a decision. A paragraph repeating a city name without describing the service does not.

Use reviews honestly

Invite genuine customers to share feedback through the appropriate platform. Do not write reviews for them, fabricate ratings or imply that a stock photograph depicts a real customer. When displaying a quote on your website, confirm its wording and permission.

Respond professionally to feedback. Use repeated questions or concerns as a signal to improve your service explanations, rather than treating reviews only as promotional material.

Make contact easy on mobile

  • Keep the contact route visible and functional.
  • Explain whether visits require an appointment.
  • Show relevant service-area information.
  • Check that enquiry notifications reach the team.
  • Keep business details updated when they change.

Measure enquiries, not only visibility

Search impressions and profile interactions show part of the journey. Record which enquiries are relevant, which services people request and whether the website answered their questions. Use that evidence to prioritise the next page improvement.
